BREAKING: Carnival Quietly Replaces Elegant Night on Some Short Cruises. Here’s What We Found Onboard.

One of Carnival Cruise Line's most recognizable traditions may be changing, at least on some shorter sailings.

During a recent four night cruise in August 2026 aboard Carnival Glory from Port Canaveral to The Bahamas, we were surprised to discover that Carnival Elegant Night was nowhere to be found. Instead, the cruise line promoted a new White Night celebration that appeared to take its place.

The change immediately raised questions among passengers onboard, many of whom still arrived dressed for what they believed would be the traditional Carnival Elegant Night experience.

And after spending the sailing documenting exactly what happened, we came away with more questions than answers.

Is Carnival Getting Rid of Elegant Night?

For decades, Carnival Elegant Night has been one of the most recognizable traditions at sea. Guests dress up, professional photographers line the ship with themed backdrops, dining room service receives special touches, and the evening is often highlighted by Carnival's signature American Feast menu.

That tradition appears to be changing on at least some shorter cruises.

On our recent four night Carnival Glory sailing, the second evening of the cruise featured the American Feast menu, which is normally associated with Elegant Night. However, the evening itself was not advertised as Elegant Night anywhere we could find onboard.

When we asked crew members about the event, passengers were told that the evening was not considered Elegant Night.

Instead, the night was promoted as White Night, centered around a White Hot themed deck party and activities encouraging guests to wear white clothing.

The shift created noticeable confusion throughout the ship. Some guests wore formal attire expecting Carnival Elegant Night. Others wore white outfits for the themed celebration. Many simply followed the standard cruise casual dress code.

Even the photo opportunities seemed caught between two different concepts. Professional photography stations and themed backdrops remained available throughout the ship, but many featured white themed designs tied to the evening's White Night branding.

How Does the Main Dining Room Work on “White Night” Compared to Elegant Night?

The changes were not limited to the ship's entertainment schedule.

One of the biggest differences we noticed was inside the main dining room.

Historically, Carnival Elegant Night has included additional dining room touches designed to create a more formal atmosphere, alongside an upgraded menu that has been labeled as the “American Feast” featuring more premium appetizer and entree options compared to standard main dining room fare. It was also previously elevated by being the last meal service in the main dining room to feature tablecloths, but this was eliminated in 2024 and is still a a controversial change to this day.

While the American Feast menu was served on our recent 4 day cruise that featured the White Night replacement for the traditional Elegant Night, the overall dining room presentation felt much closer to a standard evening than what many Carnival cruisers have come to expect from Elegant Night.

That has led some passengers to wonder whether Carnival is also rethinking parts of the traditional Carnival cruise dining experience on shorter sailings.

Was the Carnival Elegant Night Menu Downgraded?

Another topic that generated discussion onboard was the menu itself. The American Feast menu was still offered, but the selections felt noticeably different from what many guests remember from longer cruises.

Among the appetizers were Cajun fried frog legs, grilled shrimp summer rolls, shrimp cocktail, steak and ale soup, and a cheese dip served with a soft pretzel.

Entree options included lasagna bolognese, herb crusted salmon, garlic jumbo shrimp, bourbon BBQ meatloaf, broiled striploin steak, chicken parmigiana, vegetable enchiladas, and an Indian vegetarian selection.

Desserts featured cherries jubilee, creme brulee, Boston cream pie, Carnival Melting Chocolate Cake, fresh fruit, ice cream, and a cheese plate.

While there were certainly popular choices available, the menu did not feel as elevated as the American Feast experiences we have seen on longer Carnival cruises in recent years, which feature premium entrees like lobster, prime rib, or filet mignon.

Whether this represents a permanent menu adjustment or simply a variation for shorter cruises remains unclear.

Carnival's New White Night Strategy Raises New Questions

Information circulating online suggests Carnival has begun replacing Elegant Night with White Night on select cruises lasting five days or fewer.

At the same time, communications sent to some guests indicate that not every short cruise is necessarily affected.

Language appearing in recent guest communications states that select five day or shorter cruises will continue to host a Cruise Elegant evening, while select shorter voyages not hosting a Cruise Elegant evening will instead feature White Hot Night.

That wording may explain why some passengers are reporting Elegant Night on certain short sailings while others are reporting White Night.

The challenge is that many guests do not appear to know which version they will receive until shortly before sailing, or in some cases after they have already boarded. For passengers planning outfits, specialty dining reservations, photography sessions, or packing strategies, that distinction matters.

What Happens Next?

At the moment, Carnival has not publicly detailed the long term future of Elegant Night on shorter cruises. That leaves several major questions unanswered.

  • Is White Night now the permanent replacement for Carnival Elegant Night on four and five night cruises?

  • Will the American Feast menu continue to be served even when Elegant Night is removed?

  • Will White Night eventually expand to more ships and itineraries?

  • And perhaps most importantly, how will Carnival balance one of its longest running cruise traditions with changing passenger preferences on today's shorter sailings?

For now, one thing is clear. Passengers boarding a Carnival cruise of five days or less may want to check carefully before assuming there will be a traditional Carnival Elegant Night onboard. Based on what we experienced aboard Carnival Glory, the answer may no longer be as straightforward as it once was.

As more ships begin reporting similar changes, Carnival cruisers will be watching closely to see whether White Night is simply a limited test or the beginning of a much larger shift in the Carnival cruise experience.
